All of the Trottas and almost everyone else in the book has this quality. His wife was institutionalized, he drank himself to death by age 44, and many of his close friends committed suicide. This is Carl Joseph as we have come to know him, incapable of acting in his own right.

Carl Joseph, now a newly commissioned cavalry officer, is paying a duty call on the man, recently widowed, whose wife taught him all about sex that summer when he was still a schoolboy.

This is a well-written and an interesting novel about the Trotta family and also chronicles the decline of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The Jews did not.
The recent wars on the European mainland, Milosevic and Tudjman, the siege of Sarajevo and the madch in Bosnia, the shelling of Dubrovnik, the destruction of the ancient bridge at Mostar, and further back the division of Maarch, the Iron Curtain, the murder of six million Jews and both world wars, all seem to me to be directly traceable to the end of the dual monarchy.
Works by Joseph Roth. As a father, the first Baron Trotta is disgusted by the historical revisionism that the national school system is teaching his son’s generation. Each chapter begins in grand style, like a galleon heading off on some worthy quest. I mean I don’t know. That is rafetzky taken care of in the first chapter. I josepu want to live to see that time!
