Considerable detail is provided on the origin of spectro- scopic principles.
This sepctra edition has also added material pertaining to line intensities, which can be confusing due to the dozens of different units used to report line and band strengths. Spectroscopy has a long tradition so many of the symbols are rooted in history and are not likely to change.
Rather than focus on the latest methods of recording spectra which will be out of fashion tomorrowI concentrate on the interpretation of the spectra.
The usual intensity formulas are derived as in Chapter 1 for transitions between nondegenerate quantum states, while measurements are generally made on transitions between degenerate energy levels. The book includes a clear presentation of group theory needed for understanding the material and a large number of excellent problems are found molwcules the end of each chapter.

The latter camp is populated mainly by analytical chemists, but includes astronomers and atmospheric scientists as well. It will also be of interest to professionals in chemistry, physics, astronomy, and engineering.

August Preface to First Edition This book is designed as a textbook to introduce advanced undergraduates and, par- ticularly, new graduate students to the vast field of spectroscopy.

Spectra of Atoms and Molecules. Spectra of Atoms and Molecules, 2nd Edition has been updated to include the revision of physical constants, and conforms more closely to the recommended practice for the use of symbols and units. Oxford University Press Amazon. The infrared and electronic spectroscopy of polyatomic molecules makes extensive use of group theory.

It is surprisingly difficult to locate line intensity formulas in SI units, with the appropriate degeneracies included. To purchase, visit your preferred ebook provider.
The author discusses such topics as molecular symmetry, matrix representation of groups, quantum mechanics and group theory.
Hertzberg’s thick 4-volume series, this book can lead you directly into the field of molecular spectroscopy. Features include a presentation of group theory needed to understand spectroscopy, detailed worked examples and a large number of excellent problems at the end of each chapter.

Bernath Limited preview – The level of treatment and spirit of the book have not changed. The ap- plication of simple analytical formulas and the nonstatistical graphical treatment of data are long dead. Smirnov No preview available – bernarh This book reviews the basic skills needed to understand the material, including a clear RicchiutoEuropean Windtunnel Association Snippet view – In keeping with the visual aspects of the course, the author provides a large number of diagrams and spectra specifically recorded for this book.
RicchiutoEuropean Windtunnel Association Snippet view – Ultimately all notation is arbitrary, although some notations are more helpful than others.

Spectra of Atoms and Molecules – Peter F. Bernath – Oxford University Press
Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford. My favorite book on group moleculex is the text by Bishop, Group Theory and Chemistry, and I largely follow his approach to the subject. The digital computer has permeated all of science including spectroscopy.
Some topics in this book, such as parity, are not discussed well in any of the textbooks or monographs that I have encountered. Undergraduate seniors and first-year graduate students studying molecular spectroscopy will find this text indispensable. The line intensity formulas listed in this book should prove useful to the modern student.
