Briefly, I would single out all the performances by Curtis, Staier, Barchi, and Baumont as being deeply satisfying and competitive with any others in the catalog. Though much of the material is borrowed from cantatas, these masses are still genuine Bach and well worth hearing and the performances, though a trifle less than authentic, do them justice. Incidentally, the date in the booklet, must be incorrect: You must excuse me for only dipping into that, since it seemed something of a sacrilege to get immersed in the whole work at Easter. Harnoncourt & Leonhardt – Bach Cantatas & Other Vocal Works – Discography Part 5

Leonhardt gives us his Goldberg Variations on a Dulcken harpsichord whose every tone is like a bell, and Harnoncourt’s “home” recording of the Cello Suites never intended for general release shows the ferment of a great musical mind. The modern copy of an eighteenth-century instrument on which Michele Barchi plays the Suites in e minor and g minor, BWV sounds exactly like a large lute, complete even with what sounds like fingering noises, combined with a harpsichord.

Matthew Passion Available in 4 different languages and in a version without the sacred cantatas. Schwingt freudig euch empor, BWV Matthew Passion remains an impressive achievement, though again the use of boy soprano soloists remains a sore point. Probably wisely, there is no attempt here to reconstruct the lost St Mark Passionthough the libretto for that work survives and much of the music can be convincingly reconstructed from the various cantatas for which Bach re-cycled it, as on the CD conducted by Michael Willens Carus I just can’t get enough of Bach!

Performance-wise, however, the new recording has all the energy that I thought slightly wanting from the Harnoncourts on Teldec. The presiding philosophy behind this project and its approach to musical interpretation can be largely ascribed to Nikolaus Harnoncourt, a true musical pioneer and galvanizing force of the “period performance” movement. You will never be bored with this to dip into over the years.

Bach 2000 – An Introduction To The Complete Edition

Prelude and Fughetta in E minor: Erfuellet, ihr himmlischen goettlichen Flammen. Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben!

The collection has a great charm to it. Its not only for experts. All of these interpreters share a certain intellectual sobriety and restraint in style, scrupulous in the best sense of that word. The lowbrow level at which it is pitched can be gleaned immediately from the opening seconds, in which brief snippets of familiar masterpieces by various composers are played in souped-up pop bacch.

Gigue – Luca Pianca. I’m almost half through it. And this was the most formative decision in my musical education. Singet dem Herrn ein neres Lied.

Nor did it seem appropriate to linger too long over the Magnificat with the Christmas additions, BWVA, here provided in a recording made by Simon Preston and the Academy of Ancient Music for Decca inwith Judith Nelson and Emma Kirkby among the soloists, a sound choice, even in the use of two superb female sopranos as against the trebles of the Christ Church Cathedral Choir. Also, I think the cantatas are not where Bach placed his heart and soul. Purists who are attracted to the Complete Edition by the preponderance of period performances, however, may find these interpretations a little too ripely romantic for their taste.

Koopman is the only begetter of all the organ music but the other keyboard works are spread around a number of fine performers: English Choose a language for shopping. There is a certain stylistic affinity in the performances of the major works in this set, given that van Asperen, Curtis, Staier, and Wilson were all pupils of Leonhardt. This music covers religious singing in German, that adds to the mystical quality that is definitely cathedral choir quality- it sends shivers through me – and operatic music, grand organs, polyphonic and counterpoint orchestral melodies that sound intelligent and clever and miraculous to me I had to ask someone who knew about music about what the parts that I love are called.

The recordings of the Orchestral Suites come from Concentus Musicus, stylish performances from which still sound well. Musical archaeologists would find among the deepest, oldest strata of these recordings the complete Sacred Cantatas which Telefunken recorded, alternating between Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, on their das alte Werk label in the early s.

Many of these new recordings tteldec of works never before available on disc, including chorales, as well as works for organ and works for harpsichord. The orchestral suites are performed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the harpsichord concerti by Gustav Leonhardt.
