I think McCammon in the early years was on a kind of creative writing learning curve, and that he taught himself how to write better as he went along. Eventually, an elderly theology professor — ostensibly the novel’s protagonist — finds out something of the nature of this “man,” and becomes allied with Michael, a mysterious man who is hunting Baal.

However, I still think “Baal,” for all bal problems, is an entertaining novel, and worth reading for horror fans. McCammon is the one writer who’s style, I find, are most closest to King’s own. Baal by Robert R. McCammon
One of its sins is that it simply isn’t long enough; this feels like it wants to be a true epic of the type McCammon later crafted in Swan Songbut is instead merely the standard or so pages. They find him and start skiing to the ocean. And soon, he realizes he’s too late for his friend, and for himself.
You know the type—they never go out of style. Then we changed settings and drifted away from the “Omen” plot and moved on to other plots we have seen before. McCammon was only in his mid-twenties when he wrote it.
The book is well written, though from the beginning I feared I was reading an “Omen” rip off.
It was such a disappointment! What starts out as quite a strong character study about a family dealing with rape and an unwanted pregnancy, soon morphs into robfrt vast tale spanning across different continents, trying its best to feel epic and failing pretty badly. An early novel like Baal showcases all the handicaps of the classic “First Novel Blues”.
The timeless battle between good and evil, in this brutal tale.

I first read it inwhile stationed in Germany. The second issue was that, of the three characters that ultimately chase Baal to ground, only one has any real motivation to do so, and he’s the guy bent on revenge for the murder of the Eskimos. Would almost be cool to see him revisit it and rewrite it from the ground up. To say that I like Robert McCammon’s writing is like saying fish kind of like water.
